ICMR Advises Against Milk Tea; Recommends Optimal Times for Tea and Coffee Consumption, Highlights Risks of Excess Intake in New Guidelines
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has released new dietary guidelines advising people to avoid milk tea and providing recommendations on the ideal timing and quantity for consuming tea and coffee. In collaboration with the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), ICMR issued 17 guidelines to promote healthy eating habits in India, emphasizing a diverse diet and physical activity. The guidelines particularly caution against excessive intake of caffeinated beverages, including milk tea.
The guidelines advise avoiding tea, coffee, and other caffeinated drinks during or immediately after meals. Instead, it is recommended to wait at least an hour before and after meals to consume these beverages. Excessive consumption of caffeine can stimulate the central nervous system, leading to physiological dependence and various health issues.
